Computer Assisted Language Learning: an Introduction by Mark Warschauer

Computer Assisted Language Learning: an Introduction by Mark Warschauer

I was impressed by some parts of his articles. Especially, three phases of CALL: Behavioristic CALL, Communicative CALL was impressive. Firstly, in Behavioristic CALL, the computer serves as a vehicle for delivering instructional materials to the student. The typical examples are Audio programs which textbook publisher made. They include English natives’ pronunciation and repetitive language drills. These are based on the model of the computer as tutor It is sure that They are very useful to practice English but they encounter criticism. Secondly, in Communicative call, Several types of CALL programs were developed and used during this the phase of communicative CALL; An extension of the computer as tutor model, the computer as stimulus and the computer as tool or workhorse. This article said that the dividing line between Behavioristic and communicative CALL does involves not only which software is used, but also how the software is put to use by the teacher and students. It means that the difference is not absolute. It depends on how teachers and students use programs. Lastly, Integrative approaches to CALL are based on two important technological developments of the last decade - multimedia computers and the Internet. It said that what makes multimedia even more powerful is that it entails hypermedia. Representative things are textbook CD programs. They include text, graphics, sound, animation and video. It is very useful to teach during the class but it is limited in textbook. In addition, it is impossible to change the content. There are some of good hypermedia programs I can use. However, it is not easy for me to manipulate. The next thing internet makes us possible to do everything. It said that language learners can communicate directly, inexpensively, and conveniently with other learners or speakers of the target language 24 hours a day, from school, work, or home. It is sure that computer-mediated communication and the Internet facilitate an integrative approach to using technology. I need good practice on make full use of internet for the best lesson.

Considerations for the Design of CALL Programs

Considerations for the Design of CALL Programs Emily Chen’s articles was so organized and comprehensible that I could understand them very easy. Among them, it was Considerations for the Designs of CALL Programs that interested me. The first thing is about Pedagogy First and Technology Second. I absolutely agree with it. When teachers hold demonstration classes, they use too much technology. I think excessive use of technology prevent students from concentrating on learning. We have to focus on learners’ need and learning objectives first. And then, we have to consider what kind of technology we should use in our classes to achieve learning aims. As we know, there are many kinds of important factors that I should consider before using computer-assisted learning materials. In addition, they have to be attractive and fun to help students have interest in learning. So I try to connect fun and learners’ need with learning. I was impressed by his words: the true creativeness of a learning program must come from the pedagogical side. It means literally that they are computer-assisted learning. I try to use technology properly to understand and practice today’s objectives. Actually, I use only a few useful programs I am used to and it is easy to manipulate and I usually use them when I make my students practice drills. From now, I will search them comprehensively and use them to motivate my students to enjoy learning as applying for CALL program design principles.

useful activities which I can use in my class

I enjoy many useful things which was introduced by Jeff. I always use chrome instead of internet explore these days. I uproad my important data on my Google drive account. I use my data whenever I want. Expecially, when I didn’t bring my usb to my class, I could open my Google drive and use my data properly. Also, I post my traveling photos on my google plus and I sometimes show my pictures related to the lesson to my students during my class. However, even though Jeff’s class is very useful, I didn’t catch up with Jeff’s class because my laziness. I repented my idleness.

Quizlet: I think this is the amazing tool to study vocabulary. I was so excited about introducing it to my students. fortunately, my students are satisfied with it. When I present flashcards, they focus on meaning and pronunciation of the words. After I print the tests on it, my students take tests. My stuents told me that this is very useful.

Jeopardylabs: As midterm exam is just around the corner, I want to review what we have learned so far. So I decided to use this. In conclusion, it was a great success. My students not only enjoy the game and but also review successfully..
